How to make crispy tofu
Crispy tofu
is a simple dish, but the details matter if you want to get it right. Here’s how you can make it at home.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil
- OPTIONAL: 2 tsp minced garlic
Recipe
- Cut tofu into 1 inch cubes.
- They should all be the same size so they fry at the same rate
- Sift flour, starch and baking powder into a large plate.
- Add salt and pepper seasoning then
- Use a paper towel gently to pat dry the tofu cubes
- Put the tofu cubes into the mixture
- Roll them around evenly and thinly coat all sides
- Remove excess flour
- Heat up oil in a pan over medium-high heat
- Oil should cover the entire surface
- First, check if the oil is ready
- Place a test piece of tofu
- Bubbles should appear straight away
- Gently put in rest of tofu
- The tofu pieces should not be touching! Leave space
- Use chopsticks/tongs to flip tofu to ensure each side is evenly fried
- Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels on both sides, to absorb excess oil
- If frying vegetables (e.g. bell peppers), or spices (e.g. garlic), drain some of the oil and cook it in the residual
- Enjoy!
